New Program: The Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2

The Mason JEP is pleased to announce a new program offering for 2012:  The Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2.

These programs will build on the concepts learned in our Economics Institutes for Judges, providing more in-depth coverage of some of the topics touched upon in Week 1 of the program and including some advanced topics such as accounting, finance, environmental economics, scientific methodology, entrepreneurship, and the financial crisis and its aftermath.

In 2012, the Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2, will be offered twice:

  • Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2—Orange, California

From March 10-16, 2012, we will offer the program in sunny Orange, California in cooperation with Chapman University. Program participants will stay at the Doubletree Hotel and attend classes on the nearby campus of Chapman University Law School.  In addition to great weather and proximity to Disneyland, this program will include a lecture by Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith.

  • Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2—Coral Gables, Florida

From December 1 – 7, 2012, the Economics Institute for Judges, Week 2, will be held in Coral Gables, Florida, in cooperation with the University of Miami.  Program participants will stay at the Biltmore Hotel and attend classes on campus at the University of Miami.

Prerequisite for Economics Institute, Week 2

In order to qualify for the Economics Institute, Week 2, you must complete or have completed an Economics Institute, Week 1, at George Mason, Northwestern, Brookings or Kansas.  Priority for the Coral Gables program will be given to those who attend the Economics Institute Week 1 at George Mason University in 2012.

The Economics Institute, Week 1, addresses fundamental issues that often are at the heart of legal disputes. Over a full week of intensive classroom lectures and discussions, judges are given a solid grounding in economics, finance and statistics. The practical relevance of these disciplines is emphasized through the analysis of numerous cases.  We will offer three sessions of our Economics Institute, Week 1, in 2012. These sessions will be held: March 18-23; May 6-11; and September 23-28 and will take place on our Arlington, Virginia Law School campus.
